Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is a very rare but potentially life-threatening condition that is caused by excessive dopamine (D2 receptor) blockade. Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome can be caused by the rapid increase in dose of a dopamine D2 antagonist or the abrupt withdrawal of a dopamine agonist medication. In this lesson, we discuss the signs and symptoms of NMS, including how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated.
