In this 12-minute video, Professor John Cimbala examines a fixed noise source in moving air at various air speeds in order to explain why a converging nozzle chokes when the back pressure is low enough. He also describes Doppler shifting, Mach angle, and the zone of silence. Finally, he briefly introduces oblique shocks and sonic booms.

These video lessons are intended for use by undergraduate or graduate students taking their first course in compressible flow. It is assumed that students have already taken an undergraduate fluid mechanics course (for which Professor Cimbala also has a popular video lesson series on his YouTube channel). The video lessons and notes closely follow the notes that Professor Cimbala uses when he teaches the course. Except for a few potential notation issues, however, these video lessons may be useful as a free resource at other schools and for anyone wishing to learn about fluid mechanics, and specifically, compressible flow.
