Between February 1968 and October 1969, three women walked into the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow and never came home. Patricia Docker, a 25 year old nurse. Jemima McDonald, a mother of three. Helen Puttock, a soldier's wife. All three were raped, beaten, and strangled with their own stockings. All three met their killer on the same dance floor.
Helen Puttock's sister Jean spent over an hour in a taxi with the man who would murder her sister that night. She listened to him quote passages from the Bible and condemn women who frequented dancehalls. She described him in extraordinary detail to police. Tall, slim, reddish auburn hair, well dressed in a Reid and Taylor suit with a military watch strap. That description launched Scotland's biggest manhunt.
The killer became known as Bible John because of his religious quotations in the taxi. Police interviewed over 5000 people. They created detailed composite sketches. They stationed undercover officers at the Barrowland every Thursday night. Jean attended countless identification parades over decades. Despite having an eyewitness and a detailed description, Bible John was never caught.
Suspects emerged over the years. John McInnes, a former soldier who committed suicide in 1980, was exhumed in 1996 for DNA testing. The results were inconclusive. Peter Tobin, a convicted serial killer, was investigated in the 2000s but ruled out. In 2022, new allegations surfaced suggesting Bible John might have been a police officer and that evidence was covered up.
Jean Puttock never stopped searching for her sister's killer. She maintained her certainty about what she saw and heard that night. She died in 2010, taking her eyewitness testimony to the grave. The case remains officially open. DNA evidence still exists. But Bible John's identity remains unknown.
This is the story of three women who deserved to go home. The dancehall that became a hunting ground. The sister who rode with a killer. And Scotland's most enduring unsolved mystery.
