Описание: Are today’s solar modules really designed to survive 25-30 years in the field? And what quality implications are ongoing cost pressures and new technologies having?

Recorded live in Barcelona, Spain at the Solar Quality Summit in February, this episode of The smarter E Podcast takes a close look at durability in modern PV manufacturing – and the warning signs emerging from the latest quality data.

Drawing on insights from Kiwa PI Berlin’s freshly-released Module Manufacturing Report, we discuss a record 3.36% defect rate in pre-shipment inspections. Rear-side glass breakage in large-format modules, thinner frames, manufacturing ramp-ups in new markets, and basic issues like cell misalignment are all contributing to growing concerns about long-term reliability.

We also examine degradation risks linked to TOPCon technology, including UV-induced degradation (UVID) and and characterization challenges such as module meta-stability.

The often-overlooked role of polymers inside PV modules is in focus in the episode – including in encapsulants like EVA, POE, and backsheets. As module designs evolve, material complexity is increasing.

New technology is also providing insights, as is highlighted in the podcast, including ho researchers are now using near-infrared spectroscopy and AI-supported inspection tools to analyze bill of materials directly in the field.
