2023 Grandland GSe: A high-performance car with an electrified powertrain

Earlier this week, we brought you a review of the brand new Vauxhall Astra GSe, the first car to wear Vauxhall's new GSe badge, which signifies a sporty, high-performance car with an electrified powertrain. But that's not it for the GSe story, because the next chapter is already here. On the same international launch event where we drove the Astra, we also got to try the second car in the GSe lineup, the new Grandland GSe.

Like the Astra, the Grandland GSe is a plug-in hybrid, but while the Astra gets 225 metric horsepower from the combination of its 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and its single electric motor, the Grandland gets a second electric motor, which helps boost the car’s overall output up to 300 horsepower. The additional motor also brings with it four-wheel drive. The 0-62 sprint takes 6.1 seconds, and the car is able to roll around on electric-only power for up to 41 miles on a full charge of the 14.2kWh lithium-ion battery, and at speeds of up to 84mph. That helps give in an official WLTP fuel economy figure of 235mpg. It has the environmental bit of the brief nailed, then, but does the GSe convince and a sporty car?
