A Roadmap for Outlining ESG Risks & Opportunities

It’s hard for board members to go about their business these days without at least some discussion of environmental, social and governance issues (ESG). ESG is the fastest-growing governance priority promoted by today’s institutional shareholders. Figuring out how to get one’s arms around defining and measuring ESG is a real challenge for both investors and companies.

Host TK Kerstetter invited John Truzzolino with DFIN Solutions to provide a basic roadmap for boards that are wondering where to start. Truzzolino helped develop a guiding white paper titled “ESG Risks and Opportunities: Understanding the ESG Landscape." He provides direction for today's boards by breaking down the ESG oversight process into four logical steps.

"The good news is...that COSO...layered the ESG framework into the existing ERM program so that boards could use the COSO framework as a way to get familiar with the enterprise risk management platform, as well as with these new principles [around] intangible assets such as human capital, environmental issues and social issues...”
