Описание: Arkutino, also known as “The Bear Swamp” (Mecheshkoto Blato), is a unique lagoon-marsh located in Burgas Province, within the Primorsko Municipality, approximately 2.5 km northwest of the mouth of the Ropotamo River. It is part of the protected Ropotamo Nature Reserve – one of Bulgaria’s most biologically diverse regions.

Separated from the Black Sea by natural sand dunes, Arkutino’s beach is a tranquil stretch of coastline where rare sand lilies bloom during the summer months. The wetland spans 62.2 hectares, with shallow waters averaging just 0.5 meters in depth and very low salinity (0.2‰), making it a delicate and distinct ecosystem.

One of the most picturesque features of Arkutino is the view toward Saint Thomas Island – also known as Snake Island – one of the few places in Bulgaria where wild cacti of the Opuntia genus grow naturally along the rocky shore.

Most of the water surface in Arkutino is covered by dense aquatic and marsh vegetation, including duckweed, marsh snowdrops, Sparganium, and various types of rushes. The swamp is also home to one of Bulgaria’s richest habitats of white and yellow water lilies. Its reed-covered shores serve as an important refuge for many rare bird species, and the swamp plays a vital role as a stopover on the Via Pontica – one of Europe’s major bird migration routes.

Arkutino is also inhabited by the rare dwarf fish known as the Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki), adding to its ecological significance.

Unfortunately, the northern part of the area is undergoing development, with new vacation villages threatening the once-pristine appearance of the landscape. Despite this, Arkutino remains a symbol of the fragile beauty of Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast – a place where wild nature still thrives.
