Radiohead - "Nude" (1996 Demo)
Eleven years before it landed on In Rainbows, this was "Nude" - or "Big Ideas" as it was known then. Recorded during the OK Computer sessions at St. Catherine's Court, this is one of Radiohead's most tortured tracks.
The Journey:
1996-97: First recordings during OK Computer sessions - band initially pleased, then soured on it
1998: Performed live throughout OK Computer tour as "Big Ideas (Don't Get Any)"
2000: Attempted again for Kid A - scrapped
2003: Attempted again for Hail to the Thief - scrapped
2004: Thom Yorke said he'd considered asking Elvis Costello to record it because "they'd play it much better than us"
2006: Finally cracked with Colin Greenwood's new bassline
2007: Released on In Rainbows - 11 years after first recording
The song went through at least 4 major studio attempts across different albums, plus countless live variations from 1998-2006. This early version has the Hammond organ and "straighter feel" that Godrich described - worlds away from the dub-influenced final version.
