The Hitch-Hiker was inspired by the 1950 killing spree of Billy Cook, who posed as a hitchhiker and murdered several people, including a family of five and a traveling salesman. He kidnapped a sheriff’s deputy and later forced two men to drive him toward Santa Rosalía while fleeing to Mexico. Cook was identified and arrested by Mexican police, then returned to the U.S. despite the lack of a formal extradition treaty. He was convicted and executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin in 1952.
The movie is a 1953 film noir directed by Ida Lupino. The film stars William Talman as the killer, alongside Edmond O’Brien and Frank Lovejoy. It is notable as one of the few classic noirs directed by a woman.
