Is America a Christian nation?
That question has ignited more heat than light in recent years. Some say absolutely yes. Others say absolutely not. And depending on who you ask, the answer feels either obvious or offensive.
But what if the problem isn’t the answer?
What if the problem is the definition?
In this video, I want to slow the conversation down and make a distinction that almost no one is making. There is a difference between personal Christianity, institutional Christianity, and cultural Christianity — and if we confuse those three dimensions, we will always come to the wrong conclusion about America.
A nation cannot be born again. Only people can.
But a nation can be shaped by Christian institutions.
And a nation can be deeply influenced by Christian culture.
Those are not the same thing.
So before we argue about whether America is or is not a Christian nation, we need to define what we mean by “Christian” — and which layer we’re actually talking about.
Let’s think clearly. Let’s define our terms. And then let’s have an honest conversation.
