The Mont Choisy smart city in the north of Mauritius is home to a golf course and tons of history. We explored the old ruins of the sugar mill while walking around the golf grounds, with a quick stop to see the place that the first airplane landed in Mauritius, and an in-depth look at the clubhouse, restaurant toilets, we were surprised.
We started with our normal montage moment and then head to the beach. While Mont Choisy is well known for its great beaches, we stopped at the airport, well, the football field. It was the site of the first plane to land in Mauritius and it came from Reunion. They have a huge piece of flat land and a monument to this great achievement.
An epic golf cart ride and we were on the 15th hole, the iconic location for Mont Choisy smart city advertising pictures and our thumbnail. We watched a golfer for a few seconds and then headed into the jungle. Riki talked about banyan trees while I discovered a forgotten chimney and found a hidden room.
We talked about how Mont Choisy sugar mill was from 1820 while showing the beautifully preserved chimney, it seemed like they used eroded stone, but in hindsight, it was probably part of lava flows. We walked around the golf bits and pointed out the luxury villa accommodation that was available before heading off to see the tortoises.
Tortoises have the ability to hold food in their mouths without eating, which I demonstrated perfectly later. They are right next to a lime kiln. A beautiful structure with a curved shape. I, of course, went in and looked around, not good on the knees as I had to crawl. We then did some swinging, on a banyan tree, not the other kind, before heading off to a round building. We had seen one before, but I'm still not sure what it was used for.
An old bulldozer, a moat for crocodiles or cattle, some old stairs, and a bit of clover eating and we found the cannon. A small hand cannon, that I couldn't pick up. I looked into an open building with an old well and the original chimney that would have supplied steam to the pump while Riki played with the horse. She is a little afraid of horses, and the horse could sense her fear.
I pointed out an old steam plow before sneaking into the construction area to find the remains of the old sugar mill. They had built in the veranda, but someone had removed the wall in an old toilet, so we had access to the back area. Oh yes, I found an old safe that was not full of spiders.
They are repairing the back area, but at present, it is home to the organic guinea fowl and the suppliers of chicken eggs, very noisy so we escaped without showing too much. The Creole house is being repaired to become a conference center, but Riki knew about the gate. It was a gift from the prince of Madagascar. We then headed off to the golf club restaurant.
Wow, I mean this place is epic. They have a model of the smart city, hard to film under glass, and a great wooden roof, but the toilets. Well, let me tell you, the place was bigger than my house. They have a garden and a lounge, living room or something where you can eat snacks and watch TV. Riki and I both made jokes about how great it was to hide from the better half, well I'm not sure that Riki thinks of me as the better half.
After mucking about looking at a new bridge and me pretending to hit a golf ball we wrapped up that part of the adventure, but more to come next time as we explore more of the smart city at Mont Choisy le Mall, and no, the boulevard is a road, not the shopping center.
A great place to experience an historic golf day, even if you don't play golf. We had so much fun looking at the old structures and feeding tortoises and horses that we hardly even noticed that we can't play golf. From the looks of their plans, Mont Choisy smart city is going to be a place, but even now a walk through the historic golf section is a must-do activity, with or without the actual golf.

We are saving up to get a drone, so we can show you more from the places we visit. Help the cause by buying a coffee. You can also get a free copy of Riki's art of the day here:
