The seventh in a 14-part series on the history of music. Romantic ideals became more prominent, tempering the previous era’s emphasis on reason and science. Songs, especially German Lieder, delivered romanticism in miniature, and the solo piano works of Chopin and Liszt contributed as well. Otherwise, the dimension of performing forces and the scale of works expanded through the century, creating grand vehicles for louder, more colorful and more chromatic music.
