Activists wearing “Free Alaa” t-shirts staged a “read-in” protest at the British Museum in London this week, during which they called for the release of Egypt’s political prisoners – including prolific British-Egyptian political activist and blogger Alaa Abd El-Fattah.
The protest took place during a preview for the museum’s upcoming exhibition Hieroglyphs: Unlocking Ancient Egypt – which is sponsored by oil giant BP. Culture Unstained, the group that organised it, targets fossil fuel companies’ involvement in arts and culture and has previously criticised the British Museum for its relationship with BP.
Culture Unstained’s protest also comes ahead of the COP27 climate summit, taking place in Egypt this year. BP is Egypt’s largest fossil gas producer with reportedly close ties to current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Activists read from El-Fattah’s book You Have Not Yet Been Defeated, which was published last year. El-Fattah has been detained as a political prisoner for nearly a decade for his involvement in the 2011 revolution which led to the removal of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. He has also been on hunger strike for almost 200 days in protest of his imprisonment and the horrific conditions he is enduring.
