The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains in turmoil as the national army clashes with the M23 rebel group, led by Sultani Makenga, a controversial figure linked to numerous war crimes. Originally from Masisi, Makenga’s military career began in Rwanda’s Tutsi-led RPF before his rise to prominence in the DRC’s power struggles. After defecting to lead M23, he has been implicated in violence and child soldier recruitment. In 2024, Makenga’s group formed a new alliance, the Congo River Alliance (CRA), intensifying the fight against President Tshisekedi’s government, leading to significant casualties and territorial losses.
