Описание: At the height of the Cold War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower secretly approved a top-secret United States plan to build a vast "nuclear city" beneath the Greenland ice sheet, known today as Project Iceworm, without officially informing Denmark, the country to which the island belonged. The idea was to install underground tunnels powered by a nuclear reactor, capable of housing thousands of soldiers and launching ballistic missiles directly from the Arctic against the Soviet Union, exploiting the strategic position and apparent stability of the ice. The project even got off the ground with the creation of Camp Century, an experimental base that operated for a few years, until it was discovered that the ice sheet was too unstable to support the structure in the long term. The plan was quietly abandoned, leaving behind nuclear waste buried in the ice and one of the most secret—and controversial—decisions in 20th-century military history.
