A space designed to foster real communication and connection, this minimalist annex in Koryo, Japan, offers a retreat from the distractions of modern digital life. Designed by Akihiro Tai Architectural Design Office and Koyori, this 42-square-meter structure integrates beautifully with its surrounding residential neighborhood. The design emphasizes the beauty of light and materials, with a central skylight that changes the ambiance throughout the day and black Taniguchi paper finishes that gently diffuse light. This annex, with its serene tsuboniwa garden and strategic slit openings, creates a peaceful, light-filled environment perfect for reflection and meaningful interactions. In this review, we explore how this unique design fosters a space that encourages privacy, calm, and real-world communication away from the screen-centered lifestyle.
