A deadly maritime tragedy unfolded just after midnight off Basilan province in the southern Philippines, when the inter-island ferry M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 sank during a routine crossing. More than 350 passengers and crew were onboard as the vessel went down in reportedly calm seas. A massive rescue operation involving coast guard ships, navy vessels, aircraft, helicopters, and local fishing boats saved over 300 people. At least 15 bodies have been recovered, with others still missing. Authorities say the ferry was cleared for departure and not overloaded, as investigators work to determine the cause of the sinking.
