Morning Over Hveragerði – Iceland Waking Up From the Sky
September 28th started the Icelandic way — chilly enough to make you question your life choices, but sunny enough to forgive everything instantly.
We were staying in Hveragerði, at Kamburinn Cottage, tucked quietly at the edge of town. The kind of place where the air feels extra clean and the silence has a sound of its own. The sun had just lifted itself above the horizon, low and golden, casting long shadows across rooftops and fields. It was one of those mornings where nobody rushed anywhere — partly because it was cold, partly because the view demanded respect.
Hveragerði is often called the geothermal town, and for good reason. It literally sits on top of hot springs. Greenhouses pop up everywhere, steam rises from unexpected places, and the earth quietly reminds you that it’s very much alive here. From the ground, the town feels cozy and small. From the sky, it becomes something else entirely.
I sent the drone up.
At first, it revealed the town slowly — neat houses, roads curling gently through the valley, steam drifting lazily in the distance. Beyond that, the surrounding hills glowed in soft autumn colours, a mix of mossy greens and earthy browns that Iceland does better than anywhere else. The light was perfect. No drama. No storms. Just calm.
And then the drone climbed higher.
Behind Kamburinn Cottage rises a massive cliff, something you feel more than see when you’re standing below it. From the ground, it looks imposing but mysterious, like it’s hiding something. And it was. The moment the drone cleared the top, an entirely new world opened up — wide valleys, rolling terrain, and landscapes we had absolutely no idea were there.
It felt like Iceland pulling back a curtain.
This is the magic of flying a drone here. Iceland doesn’t reveal everything at once. It makes you work for it. One elevation change, one ridge, one cliff — and suddenly the scenery doubles. From above, you see how small towns like Hveragerði are perfectly tucked into nature, not fighting it, just existing alongside it.
Back on the ground, warmth became a priority. So we all gathered on the veranda — Krystian and Grazyna, and the Smarts: Tori, Richard, Tilly, and Noah — wrapped in bathrobes, breathing out little clouds of steam, soaking in the view like professionals.
Standing there together, with the sun now fully awake, the cottage felt perfectly placed. Below us: the town slowly starting its day. Behind us: cliffs and hidden landscapes. Above us: blue sky that felt almost suspiciously friendly for Iceland.
The drone came back down for one more shot — all of us on the veranda, tiny against the scale of the land, smiling into the cold, framed by mountains and morning light. One of those moments that doesn’t need posing. Iceland does the heavy lifting for you.
Hveragerði isn’t loud. It doesn’t try to impress. But on a crisp September morning, with friends, sunlight, and a drone in the air, it quietly delivers one of those memories that sticks.
Cold hands. Warm company.
And Iceland, once again, showing us more than we expected.
