The Elephant Sanctuary | Shirley & Misty "Touching Moments"

Описание: Elecam capture from this past month---"Touch" is an important means of communication and socialization for Asian and African elephants. Here we see a lot of classic "friendship" touches between Shirley and Misty. Shirley tugs on Misty's tail, they drape their trunks over one another, they lean into each other, they use their incredible sense of smell to gather information from one another. Perhaps most tellingly, we sometimes see Shirley standing near a napping Misty, gently caressing Misty's trunk with her own. This evolving friendship between two adult elephants (Shirley turns 66 this year, while Misty turns 50) can help us understand the very complex social needs of these amazing animals.
