I couldn't find a good video of this, so I'm hoping this helps out some of you. I'm sure there are only 8 people in the world that have these and would do this, but hopefully it will help those 8 people! I'm sure some of the stuff will carry over to other models, but this is different than the 700cc video version I found. I have a 2009 Arctic Cat Thundercat 1000 H2 SE that I've had for about 10 years. I've done all the maintenance and repairs that it's needed during that time. In February, I got stuck on the top of a mountain at the Hatfield McCoy trail system during a snow storm. The machine wouldn't turn over, and initially, it turned over but not hard enough to start. It eventually wouldn't turn over at all. I tried what I could on the mountain, but I eventually conceded that the starter had a problem, especially after being towed almost 10 miles to a store to get a new battery which obviously didn't fix the problem.
After some research, I found that 2008-2009 Thundercat 1000's have an issue with a high gear ratio and a poor performing starter. Not wanting to just swap a starter and still have a hard starting machine. My quad would always hesitate after the first crank before it had the momentum to turn the engine over fast enough to start. Arctic Cat released a kit, part number 0837-020, which came with a faster spinning starter and different gear to make the starter even more efficient. Long story short, my starter spun some magnets and was destroyed. I probably could have replaced just the starter, but since I don't even have 150 hours on my machine, I wanted to fix it better than it was from the factory. After installing this kit, my quad starts better and smoother than it ever did.
This video, while long, shows you everything to do, with torque specs, to install this kit into your machine. I would say that if you didn't have any problems with removing bolts like I inevitably did, you should be able to finish the job in about 2.5 hours. All in all, it took me about three and a half hours with getting one of the starter bolts off. In the video, I even tell you what size bolts to buy to replace the torx T30's that hold the starter to the engine block. Some of the video is sped up a bit, so go to .5x speed in the settings to see it at normal speed if you're having trouble, but I only sped up the parts that are pretty obvious!
Happy wrenching, and feel free to let me know in the comments all the things I could have done better!
