Under this deal, SpaceX will handle all nine launch missions in the latest round of the Pentagon’s National Security Space Launch program—shutting out rivals like United Launch Alliance and Blue Origin.
These launches, scheduled between 2026 and 2028, will carry satellites for the Space Development Agency and the National Reconnaissance Office. The goal is to expand the U.S. military’s space-based surveillance and missile tracking capabilities. Instead of relying on fewer, large satellites, the focus is shifting to a network of smaller, low-Earth orbit satellites that respond faster and are harder to disable.
Some of the satellites are being built by Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, and Boeing’s subsidiary Millennium Space Systems. The classified reconnaissance missions will provide global intelligence for the U.S. government.
This isn’t SpaceX’s first big Pentagon win—back in late 2025, they also scored $714 million in national security launch contracts, and in 2024, they were tapped to expand Starshield, a secure version of Starlink, for Ukraine’s defense.
