On April 18, 2001, The John Adams Institute presented an evening with Dominican American author, Julia Alvarez. Magdalena Perkowska moderated the evening.
An esteemed Latina novelist and poet, Ms. Alvarez discussed her latest work, In the Name of Salomé, which portrays the life of a recently retired librarian whose view of life is invigorated by memories brought forth by the recent rise to power of Fidel Castro. What follows is a struggle of choice: whether to retire in Florida or move to Havanna to try to relive the life of her late mother. Ms. Alvarez’s writings capture the social, political, and cultural essence of Caribbean America, blending fact and fiction, domestic political drama, and family history. Her other works include In the Time of the Butterflies, How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, Yo! and Something to Declare.
