How do you make someone want to listen to your song instead of the millions of other tracks out there? Are the Loudness Wars truly over, or we all just kidding ourselves? The music industry has been obsessed with loudness since at least 1930. I trace the history from vinyl's physical limitations through the release of the Waves L1 in 1994 and the L2 which changed everything, all the way to Metallica's 'Death Magnetic' album in 2008 which is arguably the loudest, most distorted record ever released by a major artist. Now, 24 years after the L2, Waves has released the L4 Ultramaximizer. I put it through its paces, comparing it to both the classic L2 and the current industry standard, FabFilter's Pro-L 2. I demonstrate what limiting actually does to a waveform, explain why the Waves L2's Auto Release Control was so critical, talk about the philosophy of stereo linking, and test what I think is the Waves L4's most intriguing feature: upward compression. I show you how far you can push a limiter before it completely falls apart, and consider whether the Waves L4 is worth adding to my limiting toolkit.
