Описание: Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he made 'good progress' on talks on tariffs and visa-free travel to China in his meeting with leader, President Xi Jinping.

He said he and the Chinese leader discussed how 'huge opportunities' in China, the world's second largest economy, could benefit people in the UK.

During their talks, Starmer told the president he wanted a 'more sophisticated relationship' with China, while Mr Xi said the two men would 'stand the test of history' if they could 'rise above differences'.

The Prime Minister has also insisted to ITV News that he and U.S. President Donald Trump 'understand each other', after Trump warned that it is 'very dangerous' to do business with the country. Starmer is the first British prime minister to visit since Baroness Theresa May in 2018.

Sanctions imposed by China against British MPs and peers have been lifted, but the parliamentarians concerned have warned their position should not be used as a 'bargaining chip' in the PM's negotiations with Beijing.

They have also insisted they would not stop speaking out against human rights abuses, including the targeting of the Uighur Muslim minority in Xinjiang province.

The Chinese foreign ministry has said 'the two sides agreed in principle to resume normal exchanges between the legislatures of the two countries' - but following the agreement with China outlined - it is understood that Britain will not be lifting restrictions in exchange.
