Harry Whyte, a British Communist, in May of 1934 wrote Joseph Stalin about the anti gay laws that had been announced. Whyte, writes of the inevitable existence of homosexuals and the reactive nature of attempting to curve their population. Whyte's defense of homosexuals would be considered out dated by today's standards but represents an important part of gay and communist history. Whyte would eventually leave the Soviet Union to support the fight against Franco's Spain and worked as a freelance journalist for the Daily Express, Daily Herald, and lastly Reuters. He traveled to Turkey, there he died in 1960 at the age of 53.
