Under the Mahalwari system, the land revenue was collected from the farmers by the village headmen on behalf of the whole village. Under the Ryotwari system, the land revenue was paid by the farmers directly to the state. The Zamindari system was started by the Imperialist East India Company in 1793.

ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരുടെ കീഴിലുള്ള ലാൻഡ് റവന്യൂ സിസ്റ്റം. 1765 ൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർക്ക് ബംഗാൾ, ബീഹാർ, ഒറീസ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ ദിവാനി അവകാശങ്ങൾ ലഭിച്ചു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ത്യാ കമ്പനിയുടെ പ്രധാന ലക്ഷ്യം അവരുടെ ഭൂമി വരുമാനം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു. കൃഷിക്കാർക്കുണ്ടാകുന്ന പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ചിന്തിക്കാതെ ഭൂമിയിൽ നിന്ന് പരമാവധി വരുമാനം നേടുകയെന്നതായിരുന്നു അതിന്റെ നയങ്ങൾ.
ഭൂമിയിൽ നിന്ന് വരുമാനം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള East India കമ്പനിയും ബംഗാളി ഭൂവുടമകളും തമ്മിലുള്ള കരാറായിരുന്നു Permanent Settlement, Bengal Permanent Settlement എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. മുഴുവൻ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലെയും കാർഷിക രീതികൾക്കും ഉൽപാദനക്ഷമതയ്ക്കും ദൂരവ്യാപകമായ പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. 1793 ൽ കമ്പനി ഭരണകൂടം ചാൾസ് കോൺ‌വാലിസ് നേതൃത്വം നൽകി.
