API-led vs Point-2-Point integration: compare costs and benefits

A point-to-point integration option would be a perfectly acceptable solution for a small company with just a handful of applications and no growth plans. Still, in most cases, the price to pay for an ever-increasing number of one-to-one connections is too high. The fixed adaptors soon become unmanageable, unstable and costly to keep in working order. Any connector developed to solve a specific project's purpose can unlikely be reused. Not to mention the wide IT skillset required to look after adaptors based on different technologies.

The API-led approach provides numerous benefits, including exposing relevant core assets to a broader audience in a well-governed and secure way. Most importantly, it enables reuse and prevents duplication, thus reducing development time and costs and facilitating further growth.

One of our customers, HM Land Registry, is an excellent example of how fast a company can start realising the benefits of the API-led approach leveraging MuleSoft. HMLR's 3 integration projects, delivered over a 15-month timeframe, benefitted from the foundations laid at the program's start. The first project aimed to improve financial planning at HMLR by generating actionable insights and real-time data consolidation. Even within that project, the team successfully reused several System APIs and, thus, accelerated the delivery. The solid foundation with reusable APIs built as a part of it and out-of-the-box connectors provided by MuleSoft enabled the team to deliver the consequent projects 3(!) times faster than the original implementation on legacy technologies.
