Started by French in 1880 and given up, Panama Canal was taken up by US engineers in 1904 and the canal was completed in 1914. Between 2007 and 2016, the 2nd and 3rd waterways were added. 815,000 ships have passed through Panama (up to 2012) and annually, 13,000 ships pass through #panama_canal Comparatively, #suezcanal which precedes Panama (1869 by Egypt), has a number of 22,000 ships passing through annually, connecting Europe and Asia continents.
