Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and Indicators for Future Success by K.A. Khor

This talk presents the analysis of ECR's in various research areas and identifies key observations on the trends and orientations. Success in academia depends on a trio of inter-related factors: institutional support, prior experience, and the personal characteristics of the researchers themselves. Through bibliometrics analysis, this talk will share insights into the outputs of top ECR's in several fields including surface engineering, materials science, and computer science. It is found that those who possess strong outputs and robust citations counts are those who select leading topics in the field. There is also the ability to go from one rewarding topic to another equally or more worthwhile topic. Another observation is the ability to form extensive collaboration networks, often among those who are the leading researchers in a particular field. Finally, the personal characteristics of the researchers play a crucial role in sustaining enduring collaborations and building upon past work together towards other prominent areas.
