The Soviet-Afghan War, also known as the Afghan–Soviet Conflict and the Afghan War, was a nearly 10-year conflict between the Mujahideen military forces fighting to overthrow the communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) government of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan against the Mujahideen supported by the Soviet Red Army. The Soviet Union supported the government while the opposition (the Mujahideen) received support from various parties including the United States, Pakistan, and other Muslim countries in the context of the Cold War. The conflict coincided with the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and the Iran–Iraq War, influencing the rise of the Mujahideen in Central Asia.
