On this second Sunday of Great and Holy Lent, we commemorate St. Gregory Palamas—a great defender of Orthodox theology and the Hesychastic tradition of prayer, fasting, and participation in the divine life of God.
St. Gregory taught that we don’t just know God through study and intellect; we experience Him through prayer, fasting, and the sacraments. The Jesus Prayer—“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner”—was at the heart of the Hesychastic movement, where monks encountered the uncreated light of God through deep, inner communion.
During this Lenten season, we are all called to pray, fast, and give alms—not just as obligations, but as ways to truly know and partake in God’s grace. When we serve others, we become beacons of Christ’s love, shining forth His presence to a world in need.
How will you enter into this deeper communion with God this Lent?
