Austria is considered to be the Alpine republic par excellence. No wonder, because Austria has the largest share of the Alps with 54,600 km². Around 65% of Austria’s national territory is Alpine and almost a third of all alpine residents live in Austria. The highest mountain in the Austrian Alps, the Großglockner at 3798 metres, is located in the Eastern Alps between Carinthia and East Tyrol.

The high mountains and the Grossglockner: What was once reserved for experienced mountaineers only, has been an experience for young and old since the construction of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which enjoys unbroken enthusiasm and fascination. Much has changed since the opening of the Alpine Road in 1935. The road became wider, safer and more comfortable. Exhibitions and museums, huts and mountain inns, visitor centres and information points focus on the diverse mountain world with its fauna and flora in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The mountain road blends harmoniously into the landscape, offers a unique mountain experience - and for more than 80 years has provided 48 kilometres of incomparable driving pleasure.

It’s 16.5 km long, has seven bends, cover 1,200 altitude metres and offers the most spectacular views and unique experiences: the Villach Alpine Road. Open all year round, the mountain road is one of a total of five premium alpine roads in Austria – each worth at least one visit! Start your driving fun in Villach-Möltschach, where the pay desk is to be found. First quickly ascend via several turns before the road opens far-reaching views of Villach, the Julian Alps and the Karawanks. Now follow the brim of the striking ridge on the wide road until it leads to the final destination Rosstratte with views of the Dobratsch summit beyond the timber line across alpine meadows.

The 34 km Nockalm Road between Innerkrems in the north and Ebene Reichenau in the south is, without a doubt, one of the most varied and beautiful alpine roads you can experience by car, motorbike and bus. The panoramic road winds up and down between the “Nock’n” through 52 bends and numerous turns with gentle incline. New views open up time and time again, such as of the largest stone pine forest in the Eastern Alps, as well as the round, green summits of the Nockberge and the vast mountain pastures. Numerous free exhibitions can be discovered along the Nockalm Road – and hiking in the habitat of the treasured spike lavender plant is just as much fun as visiting the numerous alpine huts and mountain inns.

Ever since re-opening in 2013, the WasserWelten Krimml have attracted around 40,000 visitors a year from all over the world, making the modern visitors’ centre dedicated to water and the Krimml Waterfalls one of the most attractive sights in the province of Salzburg. Plan your easy journey with your own car, the Pinzgaubahn trains, bus or taxi. Parking for cars and motorbikes and the bus station are located directly at the WasserWelten Krimml. First park on the P4 grounds, then visit the waterfall centre, where you can buy the affordable combined ticket and where you get the blue coin for P4 grounds and visit all attractions of the WasserWelten Krimml and the Krimml Waterfalls. The info folder, which you will receive at the pay desk, gives you a quick overview of the entire area.
