Michel Foucault from A to Z.
One of the most important, but also darkest entries in Michel Foucault's dictionary is “the outside.” In order to explain it, he suggests here that we distinguish between two types of outside: on the one hand, the exteriority defined and created by power in order to separate madness, crime and other deviations from society; on the other hand, the “dehors” of language and enunciation as established by modern literature (Mallarmé, Artaud, Blanchot, etc.) to refer to the continuous, anonymous buzzing of discourse. It thus becomes clear that although there is no subject outside of power, there is very well an instance that power must also resort to in order to construct its exteriorities.
