September 1952 marked a massive cultural change in television in America as well as in the city of Portland, Oregon. One of the largest cities still without their own TV station, when the FCC lifted a freeze on issuing new licenses for stations in the spring of 1952, Portland struck. While initially felt the earliest a station would start broadcasting would be 1953, Portland’s KPTV channel 27 began programming on September 20, 1952. This was not only Portland’s first station, making for an explosion in TV purchases within the city and beyond, but it was also America’s first commercial UHF station.
In this video I dive into this history of how the television craze finally hit the City of Roses, the circumstances of how KPTV came together, and a little history on the oddities and concerns about this new home entertainment device.
