Pakistan’s Upper House of Parliament approved the "Compulsory Teaching of the Arabic Language Bill 2020", making it a mandatory subject for grades 1-12 in the capital Islamabad.
While presenting the bill Senator Javed Abbasi said that Arabic was the world’s fifth most-widely spoken language, that it will increase job opportunities for Pakistanis in the Middle East, and would help people understand the Quran and the five daily prayers.
