My mother taught me the finger first knuckle method of cooking rice on an open fire using a Dutch oven or Caldero, the finger knuckle method is how we have the correct measurement of rice to water to cook rice perfectly on an open fire.

Part of survival cooking outdoors is knowing how to build a rock fireplace to place the Dutch oven on safely, how to start a fire and how to regulate the heat of the fire.

The finger knuckle method of cooking rice on an open fire is very easy yet cooks rice perfectly with the correct rice to water ratio and is a great survival skill to have.
