This is simply an excerpt, and 'drums only' version of a recent recording I did for iGenesis - if you want to see the complete iGenesis band playing this track, please visit our seperate channel!
This is a fantastic and iconic Genesis track, taken from the Seconds Out Tour, and the drumming by Chester is beautiful. I find it very tough to copy.
This video and my drum audio has been used by Cyrus in USA to create another one of his incredible iGenesis videos. All I have done here on this vid is mix in the original Seconds Out audio so that those of you who especially like the drums can see most of what I did. It is most certainly not note for note, but I have tried my best to get it close :-)
From a drumming point of view, this track is pretty damn tough! But it is the little things that make it so hard, not just the obvious and hectic 15/8 or 13/8 or whatever the hell it is 2 minutes in. For example, the buzz roll bit, with the hi hat and bass drum at 1'26, requires an incredibly controlled touch: you can tell by the serious look on my face! I find that to splash my hi hat like that whilst playing the press roll (and it is a very slow roll, making it all the harder), very difficult. Chester plays it wonderfully.
(BTW, the piano at this point is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard, and I love how Chester compliments it on drums, though it is surprisingly difficult to copy).
The little 'hiccup' fill as I call it at 3'25 is odd as hell and hard to play right (I didn't do it quite right, plus it works better with Phil playing his kit as well); the bass drum doubles at 3'42 are awkward, and the outrageous hi hat accent thing at 4'49 is just horrific (well, for me it is anyway!). I love how Phil always makes it look so damn easy, whilst I have to gurn and grimace my way through it, and still get it wrong :-)
Obviously the highlight for many people is Phil Collins doing his thing from 1'52. Really fast, very intricate, weird fills and a mind-numbing time signature. It took me a long time to feel comfortable with this, even though I did the 1992 version of this for YouTube a year or two back - you soon forget how to play it!
The drumming in the extended guitar solo is of course wonderful, but only because Chester is playing also. It is the two drummers perfectly matching each other that makes it so great and powerful, (especially the two hi hats, one in each ear through headphones!) something I cannot really duplicate in this video :-)
I hope you enjoy this, and hopefully it provides a pleasant alternative drumming view for the full iGenesis video.
And yes, this is AN EXCERPT! Don't write and ask me where the first two minutes are, ok?!
Повторяем попытку...
