Coordination frameworks: from complex order to quantum function
Coordination framework materials, where metal ions are connected by molecular ligands into extended networks, are modular: their components can be exchanged while retaining the overall structural topology. This modularity allows for design strategies that are challenging to realise in conventional atomic inorganic materials. In this talk I will discuss recent work from the Cliffe Group investigating complex order in coordination framework compounds, and their potential thus to realise quantum properties.
I will highlight in particular our work on metal thiocyanates as pseudohalides, showing that the thiocyanates are as rich as metal halides, uncovering quantum magnetism in Cu(NCS)2 [1] candidate single layer ferromagnetism in Ni(NCS)2[2]; and offer new routes to ferroelectricity in thiocyanate Prussian Blue analogues.[3] I will also discuss how dense metal-organic frameworks can be used to realise canonical quantum phases, using the topological S=2 Haldane phase as an exemplar.[4]
