Have you ever wondered how some of your favorite acoustic players make their strum patterns sound so good? This video shows you how to use a scale to create acoustic guitar rhythm patterns that stand out from the typical strum patterns you may be used to playing. The example in this video uses the G, C, and D chords (a I-IV-V) in the key of G to illustrate how you can use the corresponding scale to add some interesting licks and fills to a generic strum pattern to spice it up and make it sound more complex and musical. The G major pentatonic scale is used in the same position as the chords you’re playing in this example, making it convenient to create your fills without losing the feel of the pattern you’re playing. The demonstration in the video shows you where to find the G major pentatonic scale you’ll be using, then the instructor demonstrates a simple rhythm in 4/4 time with a particular picking pattern. After setting up the basic pattern, he shows you how to add a simple fill that takes the place of the actual strumming in your pattern. The video suggests starting simple, using just a couple of single notes in your fill, and advancing to more complex rhythmic figures as you progress. Listening to the video, it’s easy to hear how well this method of creating licks will work in all types of music, depending upon the rhythm patterns you play and the rhythmic structure of your fills. There really is no end to the variations you can use by extracting your fills from the scales associated with your chord progression. Listen closely to the lesson and try it for yourself. You’ll be amazed by how quickly your everyday chord progressions are transformed into something more musical.
