With the hype around genAI now beginning to settle down, Neil Selwyn points to some longer-term questions that need to be discussed as genAI capabilities are now being baked into various aspects of higher education practice. What forms of genAI are now taking hold in universities, and with what consequences? How do genAI logics and values fit with established educational and scholarly expectations, and how are tensions being resolved? Is there a moral case for universities resisting and rejecting genAI completely … or is it possible to think otherwise about alternate forms of genAI that higher education might want and genuinely benefit from?
The lecture was organized by the DELab UW center in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education during the conference "GenAI in Higher Education: New Perspectives for Research and Teaching", University of Warsaw, May 29-30, 2025.
