This request was at least 3 months late, but I'll be putting this up anyway. Mario's no longer at 10 HP, really, but there's a reason for that. You see, I hit the FP limit of 50 and the BP limit of 30 earlier, and the level-up forced me to choose a maximum HP of 15 instead.
Nevertheless, the fight against the master of the Toad Town Dojo is supposed to be a tough challenge, probably tougher than the final boss--not unlike a certain dojo master this character is based on.
