In this lecture, we explain the Dissipation Factor Test, also known as the Tan Delta Test, and compare it with the Insulation Resistance (IR) Test in power transformers.
Although both tests are performed to assess transformer insulation, they differ in principle, sensitivity, and diagnostic value. Through practical case studies, we will see how:
The Insulation Resistance Test (using a Megger or DC source) gives a quick check of leakage resistance, but may miss deeper insulation problems.
The Tan Delta Test (using an AC source) measures dielectric loss and the loss angle delta, providing a more sensitive indicator of insulation aging, moisture, or contamination.
You will learn:
✅ Why transformer insulation behaves like a capacitor.
✅ What angle delta and angle theta represent in insulation current.
✅ The meaning of tan delta (%) and cosine theta as indicators of dielectric health.
✅ The permissible limits of tan delta values according to IEC standards.
✅ Real examples where IR Test and Tan Delta Test gave contradictory results—and why both tests are important.
✅ A quick comparison: device used, what is measured, sensitivity, cost, and when each test is performed.
By the end of this lecture, you will understand not only how each test works, but also why it is necessary to perform both tests for a complete evaluation of transformer insulation.
If you are involved in power transformer testing, commissioning, or maintenance, this lecture is essential for mastering insulation diagnostics.
