Sorrento is a coastal township on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia, approximately 103 km (64 mi) south-west of Melbourne's Central Business District, within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area. It sits at the southern tip of the peninsula, bordered by Port Phillip Bay to the north, Bass Strait to the south, Portsea to the west, and Blairgowrie to the east, covering about 7 km² with a population of 2,013 as of the 2021 census (up from 1,592 in 2016). Known for its mild weather, historic limestone buildings, white-sand beaches, boutique shops, galleries, and elegant eateries, it blends laid-back luxury with seaside charm on the traditional lands of the Bunurong/Boonwurrung people.
History
The area, originally known as Bullanatoolong to the Boonwurrung people, was occupied for tens of thousands of years before European arrival. In 1802, Lieutenant John Murray of HMS Lady Nelson entered Port Phillip Bay and took possession at Point King. The following year, in 1803, Lieutenant Governor David Collins established a short-lived convict settlement at Sullivan Bay (near the Eastern Sister headland), marking Victoria's first official European mainland settlement outside Sydney—with around 500 people, including the region's first magistrates' court, hospital, postal service, printing office, wedding, christening, and funeral. Abandoned after months due to water shortages, it relocated to Hobart; convict William Buckley escaped and lived with Aboriginal people near Geelong for over 30 years. The name "Sorrento" (inspired by the Italian town) emerged in 1869 with housing development. From the 1870s, entrepreneur George Coppin boosted growth with the Sorrento-Queenscliff ferry (1874), Continental Hotel (1875, limestone-built), and a steam tram (1889–1921). The town features 30 heritage-listed properties, including the Mechanics' Institute (1877, now Nepean Historical Museum), Sorrento Post Office (opened 1871; current building 1904–1905), Anglican Church (1875), and Sorrento Park (established 1870 with Gallipoli-sourced trees).
Attractions and Things to Do
Sorrento's dual coastlines offer calm bay beaches (Front Beach for swimming/sea kayaking) and rugged ocean beaches (Back Beach for surfing). Key spots include:
**Sorrento Pier**: Departure for Queenscliff ferry (year-round, 7 days/week), dolphin/seal swims (October–April), fishing charters, bay cruises, and scuba diving.
**Historic Sites**: Collins Settlement monument, Nepean Historical Museum (maritime artifacts, pioneer cottage), and walks like Millionaire’s Walk (cliff-top views of mansions) or Sorrento-Portsea Artists Trail (art-inspired vistas).
**Parks and Trails**: Sorrento Historic Park (lawns, BBQs, playground, bay views); Bay of Islands (rock formations); Coastal Walk (30 km trail to Cape Schanck).
**Shopping and Arts**: Ocean Beach Road's limestone boutiques (antiques, designer wear, homewares, jewelry); galleries like Manyung Gallery; January art festival.
**Dining and Wellness**: Seafood eateries, cafes; nearby Peninsula Hot Springs; luxury stays like InterContinental Sorrento (former Continental Hotel).
Sports include the Sorrento Sharks (Australian Rules football, multiple premierships in Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League) and Sorrento Cricket Club (Provincial Division). Golf at Sorrento Golf Club; cemetery notables include cricketer Shane Warne and Dame Zara Bate (wife of PM Harold Holt, who vanished nearby).
Current Information (as of October 30, 2025)
Victoria is experiencing severe weather, with damaging winds (gusts 90–110 km/h) affecting central and western areas, including the Mornington Peninsula and Port Phillip. Gale warnings are in place for Port Phillip, with conditions easing by October 23 but potential ongoing impacts; sheep graziers warned of cold, rain, and winds. Recent events included road closures for the "Around the Bay" cycling event on October 26, affecting Sorrento and nearby areas (reopened by evening). Upcoming: Point Nepean Heritage Motor Show on November 2 at Point Nepean National Park (325+ classic cars). The visitor center (38 Ocean Beach Road) is open daily 10am–3pm until April 30, 2025. No major local incidents reported recently on X, though global mentions confuse it with Sorrento, Italy.
