Irish Tune from County Derry (Irish folk song)
Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961), arr. Geoffrey Edwards
Conductor's Notes:
"Londonderry Air", as this famous tune is most accurately known, was first transcribed in 1810 by Irish folksong collector Jane Ross, in Londonderry County, Ireland (hence the title), and published in 1855. The words most often associated with it, "Danny Boy" were penned, ironically, by an English lawyer, Fred Weatherly, in 1910. Australian composer Percy Grainger wrote his stunningly beautiful arrangement for wordless chorus in 1902. Grainger is best known for his masterful compositions for wind ensemble, and his later arrangement of this work for that medium is far more often performed than the choral original.
