And that behavior reinforces the original thought. It's a loop. And if you're not aware of it, it runs your entire day.
In this Monday Mindset, John breaks down the two states of mind every professional operates in — and why you can only be in one at a time.
The powerful state. This is where you're creative, solving problems, seeing possibilities, and showing up as the best version of yourself.
The primal state. Fight, flight, or freeze. This is survival mode. Your brain shuts down creativity and goes into pure reaction.
John explains the science behind it: the sympathetic nervous system (your accelerator into stress) and the parasympathetic nervous system (your brake pedal back to calm). And at the center of it all is the vagus nerve — the longest cranial nerve in your body, running from your brain down through your heart, your lungs, and your stomach.
That racing heart before a tough client call? That tightness in your chest when you see a rate increase? That sick feeling in your stomach when a deal falls apart? That's your vagus nerve triggering a stress response. It was designed to protect you. But the problem isn't the response itself — it's getting stuck there.
When you're stuck in the primal state, you can't think creatively. You can't problem-solve. You can't show up the way your clients need you to. You react instead of respond. You freeze instead of lead.
This week's challenge: Start recognizing when your vagus nerve is doing this to you. Notice the racing heart. The shallow breathing. The stomach tension. Don't try to fix it yet — just notice it. Awareness is the first step.
Next Monday, John shares the actual hacks to shift yourself out of the primal state and back into the powerful state.
The Lesson: You can't change your feelings or behavior without first changing your thoughts. And you can't change your thoughts if you don't recognize when your brain has hijacked you into survival mode. This week, just notice it. The tools to fix it are coming.
