Why does tension exist between Black Americans and immigrants from the Global South despite our shared experiences with racism, colonialism, and discrimination? In this video, I examine how our different relationships with America, the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, racial hierarchy, media narratives, and the pressure to gain acceptance can push marginalized communities apart. Rather than reducing the issue to personal hatred, I ask who benefits when Black Americans, African immigrants, Caribbean immigrants, Latinos, Asians, and other communities fail to recognize our shared interests.
