Among the trick-or-treaters were three friends—Emma, Jake, and Lily—who had one goal: to visit the infamous haunted house at the edge of town.

The house had stood abandoned for years, its windows cracked, and its yard overgrown. Rumor had it that the house was cursed, haunted by ghosts who roamed the halls, searching for lost souls on Halloween night. But the trio was fearless. Armed with flashlights and a pillowcase full of candy, they decided to see if the rumors were true.

As they approached the house, the wind picked up, scattering orange and yellow leaves across the path. The creaky iron gate groaned as they pushed it open. Beyond the gate stood an eerie bonfire, flickering in the distance, and several Jack O' Lanterns, their carved faces glowing with mischievous grins.

"Are we really doing this?" Emma asked nervously, staring at the flickering pumpkins.

Jake grinned. "Of course! It's Halloween. What's the worst that could happen?"

The trio climbed the porch steps, and just as Jake reached for the door, it swung open by itself with a loud creak. Inside, the air was thick with the smell of burning wood and something else... something old and musty. A chill ran down their spines as they stepped inside.

Suddenly, the door slammed shut behind them.

Lily let out a nervous laugh. "Very funny, Jake."

But Jake shook his head. "That wasn’t me."

Before they could react, they heard a low whisper. "Trick or treat..."

The friends froze. "Did you hear that?" Emma whispered.

"Maybe it's just the wind," Jake said, though his voice wavered.

They ventured further inside, their flashlights flickering. The floorboards creaked beneath their feet, and the walls seemed to close in on them. Every now and then, they'd catch a glimpse of a shadow darting past, or the flicker of a ghostly figure in the corner of their eyes.

As they reached the center of the living room, a cold breeze swept through the room, extinguishing their flashlights. In the darkness, the whispers grew louder. "Trick or treat... trick or treat..."

Suddenly, a glowing figure appeared in front of them—an old, ghostly woman, her eyes hollow and her voice echoing as she repeated, "Trick or treat?"

Terrified, the friends backed away, their hearts pounding in their chests. But just as quickly as the ghost appeared, it vanished, leaving behind nothing but the flickering light of the Jack O' Lanterns outside.

Realizing they had seen enough, the trio bolted for the door. As they ran outside, the wind died down, and the whispers ceased. They stopped at the end of the path, breathless, looking back at the house.

"I think we got our answer," Jake said with a nervous laugh.

Lily nodded. "Next year, let's just stick to regular trick-or-treating."

As they left the haunted house behind, they couldn’t shake the feeling that they had disturbed something ancient, something that would remain there... waiting for the next brave souls to enter.
