Summary: Over the last 20 years Dr. Alissa has come up against these types of questions, which ask not only what can be done through the development of new interactive technologies but what should be done ethically. As a result, she has developed an interdisciplinary, child-centric approach or framework that she uses to conduct research in child-computer interaction, a sub-field of human-computer-interaction (HCI). In this presentation, she will provide an overview of this framework illustrated with examples of novel technical systems, child-focused design methods, and complex field studies that were developed to investigate the ways in which emerging interactive technologies can be part of solutions to key challenges facing children and their well-being in the 21st Century. Alissa’s research contributions are theoretical, applied, design oriented, and most critically addresses not only what can be done technically, but what should be done ethically through responsible technology innovation.

About the speaker: Alissa N. Antle is a professor in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University. As an innovator and scholar, her research investigates how emerging forms of interactive technologies can support, change and augment the ways that children learn, develop and connect. Her interactive systems have been deployed to facilitate collaborative learning about aboriginal heritage, sustainability and social justice; improve learning outcomes for dyslexic children; help disadvantaged children learn emotion regulation; and support children to reflect critically on emerging
technologies that impact their lives. Alissa is a Faculty Distinguished Researcher and Community-based Researcher Awardee, and a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, acknowledging her as one of Canada’s intellectual leaders.
