HMS Hood was the Royal Navy’s most famous battlecruiser and, for two decades after her commissioning in 1920, the largest warship in the world—earning the nickname “The Mighty Hood.” Built during World War I, her design was heavily revised after the Battle of Jutland exposed weaknesses in battlecruiser armor, but she never received a full modern reconstruction.
Between the wars, Hood served as a global symbol of British naval power, conducting worldwide cruises and operating mainly in the Mediterranean. By the late 1930s, advances in naval gunnery had made her vulnerable, yet World War II forced her to remain in service without major upgrades.
On 24 May 1941, during the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Hood engaged the German battleship Bismarck. Within minutes, a shell penetrated her defenses, detonating her aft magazines. Hood exploded and sank in seconds, with only 3 survivors out of 1,418 crew. Later investigations confirmed a magazine explosion as the cause, though the exact trigger remains uncertain.
