Today’s session features Jennifer Burns, Associate Professor of History at Stanford University, who will be speaking about the life and ideas of Milton Friedman. A historian of twentieth-century U.S. intellectual and political life, Professor Burns research focuses on the intersections of markets, state power, and political ideology. She is the author of Milton Friedman: The Last Conservative (2023), the first full biography of the influential economist and a major new interpretation of his place in American intellectual and political life.
Her talk will explore Friedman’s evolution from an academic economist to a leading public intellectual and policy advocate. Drawing from her recent biography, Burns will examine his early academic influences, his controversial policy proposals, his role in the monetarist-Keynesian debates, and his enduring impact on political and economic thought in the United States.
